Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Central Academy Middle School to speak with their art and agriculture classes. It was an enriching experience where I shared how I’ve intertwined these two passions into my full-time career. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on that day and share it with all of you.
A Journey of Passion and Purpose
Standing before a room filled with curious young faces reminded me of my own days in middle school. Back then, I was playing and helping out on the family farm and equally captivated by the world of art. Never did I imagine the two would eventually become my full time career.
Sharing My Pathways
During the session, I shared my journey—how I pursued art and graphic design in college while the farm always remained a constant backdrop in my life. I explained that art isn’t just about painting or drawing; it’s a medium to express ideas and emotions and, in my case, to promote diversity in agriculture.
I showcased a piece of my high school artwork that once hung in the U.S. Capitol building for a year and later became the first piece I ever sold. I took the students through my college experience of learning graphic design and entering the workforce at a design firm located in downtown Roanoke. We discussed how, in my adult years, I had the opportunity to paint numerous five-foot statues of the famous Virginia Tech Hokie Birds and how I also use my skills to host paint nights across the area.
I then demonstrated how all these life skills have been molded together to create what has now become a living legacy for our family. I use my art and design abilities daily with the festival—whether it’s a sign that needs to be designed or a map that needs to be made. Art and agriculture are interwoven in my work, and I showed them how these combined passions have shaped my career.
Reflecting on the Impact
Leaving the school that day, I felt inspired and hopeful. It’s gratifying to know that by sharing our experiences, we can motivate the next generation to explore unconventional paths. Combining art and agriculture wasn’t something I ever set out to do but has become a way to contribute to society by fostering sustainability and creativity.
Looking Ahead
I am excited about the potential collaborations and innovations that these young minds will bring to the world. If my visit sparked even a small interest in one student to pursue their dual passions, then it was all worthwhile.
Final Thoughts
To anyone reading this who feels torn between different interests, remember that the world isn’t limited to predefined paths. Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those we forge ourselves by blending our unique passions.
Thank you to Central Academy Middle School for the opportunity, and here’s to inspiring and being inspired!
